Kabuki-za

Kabuki-za Tower

The Kabuki-za Theater opened in 1889 (Meiji 22). The current Kabukiza was rebuilt in 2013, and includes the high-rise office building Kabukiza Tower and the underground plaza Kobikicho Square. The fifth floor of the tower and the Kobikicho Plaza are treated as outside the theater, so you can enter and leave without a ticket.

What is Kabuki?

Kabuki is an indigenous Japanese form of theater and a traditional performing art. It is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. All kabuki actors who perform kabuki are male, and those who perform female roles are called onnagata. Today, many actors are active not only in kabuki but also in movies, dramas, and variety shows.

Restaurant in the theater

During intermission, you can also enjoy a meal at the theater’s restaurant. In addition to sushi, unagi, and sumptuous gozen in the tasteful restaurant, there is also afternoon tea. There is also Kitcho, famous for its fine Japanese cuisine.

Popular souvenirs

If you’ve come to Kabuki-za, you’ll want to buy a souvenir that is typical of the theater and take home a souvenir of your visit. You can find a variety of souvenirs, from decorations to sweets.
